GM> RS> You mean like a memory stick that has
GM> RS> MP3's on it?

GM>That sounds feasible, especially if the memory was non-volatile
GM>RAM. Then you could download other books into the stick.

I use Compact Flash cards with my digital camera and to
move files3es from one system to another - the largest I have
is 256 Mb. There is also Smart Media, Memory Stick, and
Compact Flash II (which is actually a miniature HD) and
quite expensive (dear to you :-) ) All have non volatile
memory.

I paid around $80 on sale for the 256 Mb, IIRC.

GM>What would you estimate they could sell for? $500 a stick? $100?

GM>$20 is probably the ABSOLUTE minimum, and this is to replace a $1
GM>cassette.

GM>Then add the player -- a power supply, audio amp and speaker or
GM>headphone jack, some control circuits, and a case around it, and
GM>we're comparing a $10 cassette player with what? $100 or maybe
GM>more?

GM>It will probably come one day, and it MAY be as cheap as
GM>cassettes and their players but I doubt it.

GM>I suspect that cassettes will one day disappear from the market
GM>and the sight-impaired people will have to pay a h*ll of a lot
GM>more than the rest of us for their "books".

They not only will disappear, but those in current use will
deteriorate to beyond use.
