Point-to-point protocol over Ethernet.

It is commonly used on ADSL connections where the ISP requires you to enter
a username and password each time that you connect.

It can be configured in your modem/router (maybe a long time ago, you
entered your ISP-assigned name/password into the modem config).

It can also be configured in the computer (when the modem is acting as a
bridge - i.e. just passing packets between DSL and Ethernet). You haven't
done that because you would certainly know if you had configured PPPoE on
your Linux install.
