Govt seeks to stop Islamic radicalism

Islamic communities at risk of home-grown extremism will be offered help 
by the federal government to tackle radical influences.

"I've tasked my department to work with other relevant agencies to develop
strategies to empower communities to counter extremism," Attorney-General 
Robert McClelland told a security conference in Canberra on Wednesday.

"It is essential that we bolster the prevention aspects of our 
counter-terrorism arrangements and to work more closely with 
communities at risk."

The 2008-09 budget papers contain a short reference to the kind of work 
Mr McClelland wants to encourage.

"Building relationships of respect and trust with Australia's Islamic
communities is important to counter radicalising influences," the
papers 
say.
