Hello Martin!

Our costs work out a bit differently, with many ISPs charging around
$20.00 US per month. Our Fidonet cost recovery contribution is $3.00
per month. So while we do have much less capacity in Fidonet, we pay much
less as well.
Also, with my friends in Fidonet, I can send mail directly from my machine to
their machine. I don't have to call some ISP whose phone lines are always
busy, or worry that their mail will bounce (AOL is known for bouncing mail
for no good reason).
For that and other differences between Europe and Zone 1, it's rather useful
to have *both* internet and Fidonet. They are different flavors; like ice
cream, sometimes you want one and sometimes you want the other.
Cheers,
Jan
