I really wish USR had marketed their WinRPI modems (the Si and  Winmodem) as 
a separate line.  Putting them in the "Sportster"  family confused a lot of 
consumers and earned USR some bad PR.

Since you need a Windows app, shop carefully and get the best  one you can 
find (and afford)...preferably one from someone with  a good track-record for 
support and frequent upgrades.   Fortunately, mainstream Windows comm 
software works well with  both WinRPI and non-RPI modems, so the software you 
get today  (and its upgrades) will still perform well if/when you upgrade  
the modem someday.
