LOL! Not laughing at you, but thinking of my great-grandfather turning off
his hearing aid when my g-grandmother was giving him hell. He'd turn it
down or off and would ask; what was that, dear? When she repeated he'd
reply to her as if she was talking about something else. It was hilarious
to watch.  You have my symphathy.

My friend Andrew's grand-father was deaf in both ears and no amount of
hearing aid helped him. He'd watch TV with the words passing across the
screen, out of sync with the picture. I have tinitus and so, the volume
must be up a bit when I watch, which kind of puts a kink in any
conversation during the movie.
