Your whole argument is based on the idea that there is a
"Correct" trekk out there somewhere. That they guy who said that Riker
couldn't be captain because the novel had Data as the captain is
*wrong*.
Perhaps his statement might be inaccurate or unlikely, and
perhaps I might agree with it, but to take a stand on the idea of
"Right"-trek and "Wrong"-Trek is to miss the point that it's
all imaginary anyway.
If the guy wants to believe and say that Riker will never be
captain of the Enterprise, let him! It can't possibly do any real
harm.
I accept the idea of canon as a starting point for discussions,
but I categorically deny and revile the idea that any one imaginary
idea is more "right" or "correct" than any other.
Repeat after me: It just a @%%$% TeeVee show!
