subject: Motorola modem

I am helping a friend with a new Motorola "voiceSurfer 33.6" modem on
a new PC (MicroCenter Pentium 133) and am having trouble getting it to
work right from either SLIPPM (Dial other providers) or from Livewire.
The problem is perplexing because I go both to dial out correctly once
each. But when I tried to dial again, I would get "no carrier"
response, even after rebooting. Also, even when it did dial out and
connect, I could not hear the dialing or "connect screeching" that is
normally heard with a modem. I think I just do not have the correct
initialization string for this modem and once it disconnects it somehow
does not reset itself. I wonder if someone who knows about these things
or this modem could help here.
The init string recommended by the manual and that I used (among many
others that I tried) is "AT&F" which resets the modem to factory
specs. These apparently default to the following settings:
E1 (Echo AT commnads), V1 (Verbose), S0=0 (autoanswer disabled), X4
Full dial progress detection), &D0 (DTR ignored), &C1 (DCD normal- on
only when modem is connected to another modem), \Q3 (Modem uses
hardware flow control), \N3 (Modem connects with error connection)
Could someone suggest what I should use as a connection string with
both Livewire or the IAK "Dial other Providers" in WARP?
Thanks.
