For some sounds, there's no substitute for a humbucker. Even an alnico
humbucker is way fatter than any single coil.

Given the current exchange rate, that's not a bad price. That would be about
$1,300 US... which is exactly what Sam Ash wants for the Les Paul Classic,
which is similar to the Standard but without pickup covers and ceramic
pickups. It also includes the case.

Guitar Center wants about $1000US for their Studio Special, which includes a
demin jacket (woopee). I've seen them for around $700, $800 with gold
hardware. That'll put you in the $1300 to $1500 range up there.
