Some unions may indeed be more concerned with themslves than their members. But in my mind, when a powerful set of companies tells certain employees that the employees won't get paid unless the project they're working on clear a profit, there's a very good reason to have a union fighting for them. I realize that the studios just dropped that demand, but it's the kind of thing the WGA has to keep beating down. And the remaining proposals about, for example, residuals on new-media distribution also demonstrate the need for strong representation of the writers.
