Christopher, I've never heard descriptive notation called "standard." More
important, though, is that these days, algebraic notation (his 1. e4,
above) has become the most commonly-used form of notation throughout the
world.
When I was an active tournament player in the 1950s, descriptive was
commonly used in the US, and algebraic almost everywhere else. I learned
both then, so I could read and study international books and magazines as
well as American ones. For the same reason, I also learned the initial
letters of the pieces in most of the major European languages.
Algebraic notation isn't at all hard to learn. I would recommend that you
add it to your repertoire; knowing both will enable you not only to play
here (many of the folks here may not even know descriptive), but to read
books written anywhere. If you'd like help in learning algebraic notation,
let me know.
