I guess I could talk about some of the spots I used to dive over here
in PR... I'll start with the ones you can get to, with out a boat.
That's one nice thing about PR, you don't have to go far to find clear
water with interesting reef. Also, you don't need to swim far off the
beach to find deep (100+ft) water.
So the first is known as "Blue Hole", resides off a beach area known as
"Shacks"- shacks is the where I first swam, snorkeled, and dove. You can
take the wife and kids down to the beach, they can swim and snorkel, and
you and your buddies can go out to the Blue Hole or the outer reef and
dive. I still have a vivid memory of a little 5 year old boy named
Angelo JR, hanging on my back while I swam him out to the reef edge, so
he could see the fish. What could be better than watching a Marine Jewel
fish swimming in and out of a lettuce-coral reef?
Blue Hole is exactly what it sounds like: a deep, blue hole about 10
feet off the beach... deep is about 30 feet and the top of the hole is
ankle- deep. the hole is about 20 feet across. and it's alive with
tropicals.
Blue Hole is just one of the neat places to see at Shacks. Shacks must
cover about 2 miles of beach area with snorkel, swim, and dive spots.
When you see the adds for PR diving in the mags and on cable, they
don't promote or show you this side of the Island. They try to sucker
you into going to the eastern side of the Isle ,San Juan ,
which is the capital. There the water stinks, and you have a high risk
of getting rapped, mugged, or car-jacked. This side of the island (West
side, Aguadilla, Rincon, ect) is still nice- Doomed to become garbage
like San Juan is, but for now, nice.
