FidoNet is a "Virtual Community" where we are all representative of the
population. Each ECHO is like a neighborhood of the virtual community.
The C_PLUSPLUS echo is _our_ neighborhood. Let's keep it a nice place
to hang out.
1) C_PLUSPLUS is an internationally distributed FidoNet echo for
discussion of the C++ programming language and closely related
topics. The primary criteria for messages entered here should be:
   a) Is this message about C++ programming? and
   b) Is this message of general interest to the echo?
"closely related topics" includes object oriented design even in a
language independent context, and discussion of other C-like object
oriented languages such as Eiffel and Sather. However, discussion
of different languages should be restricted to manner of use, NOT
arguments over which language is best.
The following is a list of backbone echos available for topics
related to C++. Pure discussions of these topics should be taken to
   the appropriate echo:
   80XXX Intel assembly language programming
   C_ECHO C programming
DR_DEBUG General computer and programming discussion
   ECPROG General programming
   GAMEDEV Game Programming
   JAVAPROG Java Programming
   OS2PROG OS/2 programming
   WINDOWS.PROG Programming MS Windows
2) Despite messages carrying a single recipient's name, all messages
posted here are available for all to read. Do not hesitate to
answer a message to someone else if you think you have something
worthwhile to say. By the same token, don't be offended if several
people comment on your post to a single individual. This is a
   public forum.
3) Do not respond to off-topic messages in the echo. This includes
answers to off-topic questions, such as "Does DBLSPACE work on
floppy disks?" Please respond in netmail.
If something in the echo irritates you, send me a message via
netmail or email. If you don't know how to send netmail, ask your
sysop. In any case, leave moderating in the echo to the moderator.
4) "Thank you" and "no content" messages are discouraged. It seems
impolite at first, but most of us get used to the lack of explicit
   Thank You's.
5) NO FLAMING - Inflammatory messages are not permitted here. If you
feel you have been insulted in some way, there are three options:
   1) Complain to the person via netmail.
   2) Bring the matter to the notice of the moderator by netmail.
   3) Ignore it.
Flames are generally off-topic, so see 3 aboveo for more details.
6) Excessively annoying behavior is forbidden. This is a judgement
call on my part. If you feel that somebody is being excessivly
annoying, please contact me by any of the methods listed below.
7) The English language is the official human language of this echo.
The intent of the echo is public discussion, so encoded messages are
   not allowed.
8) All messages should comply with the FidoNet message requirements.
Origin lines should be no longer than 79 characters. Messages should
not contain hi-bit characters with the exception of soft CR's (
'\x8D' ). Due to this echo going to multiple zones, please include
the zone number in your origin line.
9) When replying to a message, it is preferable that you quote some of
the original message so people will know what you are talking about.
However, please try to quote just enough to get the point across --
I recommend 5 to 20 lines, the shorter the better.
DO NOT quote the seen-bys, or the origin and tear lines unaltered,
as this confuses some badly behaved mail processors.
10) Code posted in the echo should be free from copyright restrictions.
It is preferable that code come with a public domain notice, but
copyrighted code with a license for unrestricted use in personal and
   commercial applications is also allowed.
11) Commercial advertisements, including job openings, are banned from
the C_PLUSPLUS echo. Non-commercial ads (e.g. for BBSes) are
allowed exactly once. Informational product announcements (i.e.
hype-free) are allowed exactly once with prior approval of the
moderator, provided they are of interest to C++ programmers.
12) This is a real-name only echo. Please use your real name in the
"From" field. If your sysop has not set it up this way, please
ask him/her to do so. Until your sysop changes this, please sign
your messages with your real name.
13) The echo doesn't have an official FAQ list at the moment, but if
you don't have a copy of snippets, don't be surprised if your
questions are answered with "look in snippets" or something similar.
|When acting in a moderator-type role, the moderator will let you know
|by signing as "C_PLUSPLUS moderator". Otherwise, he's just another
|programmer who is just as likely to be wrong as you are.
Comments and suggestions regarding the conference and/or its rules are
always welcome.
