I am not going to argue that intercepts didn't take place. When you have been intercepted many times, you can tell the reckless ones from the professional ones. One clue, it doesn't have to due with distance. I was always comfortable with Soviet intercepts. Couple from Tunisia made me a little bit nervous. Reckless is when an F-8 runs into you. Fire control lock up is reckless. Doesn't matter that you could be taken out with the gun. It just is outside international norms. Even when I flew closely by a Soviet ship they wouldn't turn on the Fire control radar. Might track you with the guns, but no radar.
