Except that he didn't. Apart from a few years in the early-to-mid 80's, 
when Multiplan and Word for DOS came out, Microsoft hasn't "innovated" 
at all; it's been decades of sloppy me-too-ism, irresponsible shortcuts, 
and classic monopoly strategies.
