FYI, that 9600 baud Hayes compatible modem for $25 won't do your
Commodore-owning friend any good unless he buys a special interface cable to
be able to attach it to his Commodore. These are very much in demand (i.e.,
little chance to find a cheap bargain on a used one) and are still sold
commercially for about $50. So your friend is really talking about $75 to go
to 9600. I don't consider that "chump change". And my understanding is that
Atari users are much in the same boat; a much-in-demand 850 interface or
similar would be required in addition to a faster modem in order to get
beyond the 300 or 1200.
