No. I could see you arguing that on the politics of the post-
Reconstruction era, or even when arguing against Nixon's Southern
Strategy. Goldwater, though, no. He was much too libertarian for that.
(He wasn't exactly on the Pat Robertson fan club, etc.) Also,
Goldwater's "New voting bloc" wasn't too big at the time because he
lost pretty big in 1964. (Thanks in part to the Rockefeller wing of
his own party.) It wouldn't be until Reagan that a lot of what
Goldwater was about could really be put into play, and that Presidency
saw the end of the Soviet era. Also, Reagan was never able to cut a
lot of spending like he wanted to, but the economic growth offset it,
and in the end the Soviets could not sustain the pace and their
economy collapsed.

If you ever get the chance to check out Goldwater's autobiography, I
reccomend it. He wasn't really hateful to anyone in it and it was a
really good history of his political career. Especially the role he
played int he resignation of President Nixon. That alone should endear
him to those who really don't like Nixon that much.
