Check out the comparison, font for font, with a modern computer using
MS software at this link:

If there was any veracity to the documents, CBS would probably have
dug the chance to get critics with said veracity, instead of risk
torpedoing their main anchor asset and high profile guy. The fact that
the documents (accredited to a dead person whose family said they had
to be fake) got called so quickly into question by bloggers typing on
the same font really canned it for them. The other experts came later
and obviously CBS believed them.

In Mr. Rather's case I am not saying he was purposefully malicious. he
may have bought into a source he should have checked better but he
wanted the story so bad he didn't check it as much as he should have.
In the increasing time pressures of media today it is a wonder such
things don't happen more. It was a very sad end to Rather's career, I
respected a lot about him. However, the documents were adequately
disproven for most peoples' tastes, including most in the media, where
the inclination to want to believe Rather and rather's sources had to
be quite strong.
