DC> I'm not sure what you mean by "the shape of Amsterdam".
I am guessing
DC> that you mean "founded by the Dutch".
Probably I was wrong about New York, but Peter the 1st who founded St.
Petersburg liked Holland and especially Amsterdam, so he intended his
"paradise" to be like Holland capital.
DC> Peter Minuit "bought" Manhattan Island from the natives.
Who was Peter Minuit?
DC> If you look at the river running straight south into New York City
DC> (usually abreviated as NYC), you will note that it is the Hudson River.
DC> It was named after Henry Hudson, an explorer for the Dutch.
BTW, we have a special Russian pronouncing of this name, which is not close to
the original and wchih I personally don`t really like for this. It is
"Gud'zon", with a stress on the last syllable.
DC> If you have a good map, check out the names of the cities that lie along
DC> that valley. And, at Albany, follow the river that flows into the
DC> Hudson River from the west. That one is the Mohawk.
DC> I hope this works for a starter...
I have looked through all my maps but no one of them is detailed enough...
Bye ..
