DF>Thank you for the help, Incidentally the 700a is the
DF>scanner i am going to purchase, even before i read your
DF>letter, but it still helped me make my mind even more.
DF>There is another difference you forgot(I think) is that the
DF>Radio shack scanner blocks out cellular and the 700a
DF>doesnt, unless I am wrong about it. Where do you live? I
DF>am asking so we could share frequency info. Thanks again.
   Drew,
Go for it! I don't know if the 700A has uninterrupted 800 mhz
coverage but if it does, all the more reason to get it. Of course
even if the 700A doesn't has uninterrupted 800 mhz coverage, there
is always the GRE Super Convertor ($100) which claims to provide
uninterrupted 800 mhz coverage for many scanners. Strangely, I haven't
heard anything about it here. I plan to make my next radio gadget a
GRE Super Convertor II for my Radio Shack Pro 60 handheld scanner to
see for myself if it works...
Monitoring is interesting. I monitor the NYC PD and Amateur radio
freqs. You can learn a lot by listening to more experienced radio
operators on amateur frequencies. At night around 8:00 p.m. on 144-
148 Mhz they have round robin type get togethers on the air and discuss
different aspects of amateur radio, etc... They call the shows Nets for
Networks. The topics range from Shortwave nets to scanner Nets.
What got you interested in scanner radio? I've always been interested
in radios. When I was a kid (a long time ago) I used to listen to a
cheap AM transistor radio at night (under the covers really low so as not
to get caught) when I was supposed to be sleeping! I have had the bug
   ever since.
I live right smack in the middle of The BIG Apple, in Manhattan.
Where do you live? I'm sure you'll find more than enough freqs to
monitor wherever you live. Since you're online you should have no
problems finding lists of frequencies on local boards in your area.
And with this Scanner conference one can always learn more about
scanning here. I'm still relatively new to radio scanners. I am trying
to find a dependable scanner magazine. There is US Scanner News but they
are in some type of financial problems and other radio magazines seem
to have limited coverage on scanner radio monitoring. TTYL
