Hi Shelia,
SK> When you say "recent"...what time span are you referring to in this
SK> context? I've heard of metacognition a good 10 years ago (does that
Perhaps the important word is the widely, I think I heard it first
about 8 years ago, but I didn't believe it to be anything more than hi
falutin edupsychobabble and didn't see much classroom application.
The concept stuck around and I'd read about it now and again. But I
think it's been only recently (say 3 years) (squirming) That I notice
more applications being suggested in teacher's manuals. But then again
it's likely that it's another case of "forest for the trees"
SK> fall under recent?). The problem is, that it is difficult to devise
SK> activities that encourage metacognition.
SK> Well, I guess certain types of journal writing assignments could
SK> _foster_ some metacognition, as well as group activities _if_ one of
SK> the students explains to another student how or why they approached a
SK> problem a certain way. Still, I think it is a very difficult thing to
SK> get to in most classroom activities.
I agree. I use an explain your plan tact when students present their
solutions to some math problems. I no longer think it's
edupsychobabble cause it does help those who do it to get their
thinking clearer, and it models the thinking for those who listen.
Peace
Bob
