FS> I'm mainly interested in the following settings...
Thanks for your input Kees!
 KB> LongDesc Character
I left it blank (spaced it out)
 KB> Description width 0
I have no Description width. I do have a "LongDesc width".
I set it as high as it would go, to 215. I don't believe
this is ever active anyway unless "One line LongDesc" is
set to NO.
 KB> Spaces to indent 0
I set this to 31 and found that it lines up well but only
if "One line LongDesc" is set to NO. I normally leave One
Line LongDesc set to YES.
 KB> One Line LongDesc Yes
Same here. Works good. However according to the docs, the
line length limit (due to the Turbo Pascal compiler) is 255
chars.
KB> Filter LongDesc [High ASCII and] Carriage returns
I also filter High Ascii. But not CR's. Again, I have a
feeling that CR's are ignored if One Line LongDesc is set
to YES. Not sure though, so I leave CR's in there just in
case. It'd be just my luck that some bozo tries to draw
box around something using "*'s" (not high ascii). Then
you might need those CR's.
KB> I filter high-ascii because a lot of descriptions have
KB> a window drawn around it and that gives a mess in a
KB> 1line description. Stripping the CR puts everything on
 KB> 1 line.
Agreed. Gawd I hate those things. I always take them out
manually anyway. Even when I was running a system that
supported them okay. I just hate 'em.
FS> sounds like the longest description I could have would be
FS> 255 characters with everything truncated after that. True?
 KB> No.

 FS> LongDesc width 215
According to the docs if you have One line LongDesc set to
YES you can have 255 chars. Actually I believe the 215 is
the longest you can have if you have One line LongDesc set
to NO and you then set LongDesc to the maximum (which is
215).
 Max length of LongDesc 0
 KB> ^^^
KB> I think that will truncate the description at 215 chars.
Well, probably not as long as you leave One line LongDesc set
to YES. According to the docs, a setting of "0" is the
default of 45 (or 48, I forget which). I leave mine at
215 just in case I ever set One line LongDesc to NO it
should still work reasonably well with 215 length and a 31
indent.
I've been experimenting and it seems to work the way I've
stated above. However, it's almost impossible to test every
scenario.
