Hello Christopher!
CT> Don't look at me! I'm the least likely shove it down your
CT> throat type! :-) I'm all for just tossing the whole "canon" issue to
CT> the wolves.
I was referring to some other people not you.
CT> I agree. It's not likely that series would be shaped around
CT> the book. OTH, I try to avoid pinning a characters future time line
CT> down when I write, preferring to leave some room there...unless I have
CT> a real good reason.
This whole discussion started when Daimon Bok tried to convince people that
because of that first scene in the Return when Spock looks up and says "Jim?"
that this made it "canon" because this was in Generations. One problem...
Spock wasn't in Generations. he also started the Data as captain bit too.
CT> Because they have the advantage of having a single writing
CT> team, versus the novel series that has twenty or so writers involved
CT> with it. It only gets problematic when they don't use the advantage.
Exactly
TA> Perhaps canon isn't the best term for it. Maybe the idea of an order
TA> of precedence which I use is better. If a movie or episode says
TA> something and a book says something that can not be resolved with the
TA> aired version, the aired version comes out ahead in my mind.
CT> But why? To soothe Paramount's ruffled feathers?
CT>
So that when conflicts arise there is some order of precedence.
TA> For example, Strangers from the Sky (a novel) says that Earth's first
CT> Read it, thought it was very well done.
So did I, and if Earth's first contact hadn't been shown in any movie or
episode i would have accepted it as "true".
CT> Having not seen the movie I cannot comment on it directly,
CT> however, would it have hurt TPTB's feelings that much to credit the
CT> author of SFTS, and remained within the parameter's set forth by the
CT> novel? At least Pocket Books gives credit where credit is due, using
CT> footnotes and other methods to illustrate where the motion pictures fit
CT> in along the novel series to help the readers get a general feel for
CT> the continuity of both medias.
That is the point, TPTB never have given a second thought about the novels.
PB can give credit because the aired versions have more authority than their
novels.
