let me jump in here now, if you don't mind. i have a purebred Brittish
Staffordshire Bull Terrier. this dog was raised on praise and the
occassional repremand, never struck. still there was a time the dog
asserted a desire to become dominant, it's a dogs nature and must be
dealt with properly. i caught the problem early and thus had little to
no difficulty, my approach being. 1 if the dog challenges stare it
down, make no aggressive moves, simply do not look away until the dog
does first, make a habit of this. 2. never back down, if you do you'll
have given the animal a taste of dominance and your problem is multiplied.
3 never strike the animal, someday the animal will realize it can dish it
out as well as take it.
4 and my personal favorite is give the dog a bath regularly, as they
develope an odor they become more obstinant.
when i aquired my, ' pit bull', it was by virtue of my girlfriend moving
in with a two year old dog. when i first attempted to give him a bath
he balked, raised the fir on his neck and growled at me, not a good sign.
however giving it some thought i figured by picking him up on his trip
to the bath, i'm 6'6'' would confuse and limit his options, well it worked.
i now own the gentlest and much happier, ' pit bull'. the dog is 62 lbs.
is always walked off lead and is safe with strangers, children and cats,
even little kittens. i bath this dog no less than once every six days and
he now walks into the tub on his own with one command. if your dog has
already established dominance i suggest you proceed more slowly with
the above steps. i now trust my Bull terrier as i trust no other, be
it animal or beast. bad dogs are usually the fault of not understanding
the dogs nature rather than a bad dog, although with pit bulls it more
a case of most owners being macho redneck types that use the animal as an
extention of their personality and raise them with a 2 x 4, much to
the detriment of society, children, small animals or whatever gets in
their way. best regards, hope it helps.
