That speed is the the rate at which data is exchanged between your computer
and serial port, *not* the actual connection speed. (on the phone line) You
are in fact getting 14400 connects.
RB> What can I do technically to obtain 38400 and a better

My setup is 57600, but the best I get with compressed files is about 1635
cps. If I'm not wrong, that rate will make a difference in multitasking
situations, but when running only one task ({COMMO}), setting it at 19200 or
higher won't make any difference.
Any, with your GVC 14.4K modem, you only get a 14400 connection, although the
rate between your computer and serial port can be 19200 or higher.
