The cruises are nice but you only get a limited amount of time in each
port. A good compromise can be the Alaska Marine Highway.  You and your car
start in Bellingham and you then head north, stopping at 4 communities
between Prince Rupert and Skagway.  The accommodation is not as good as a
cruise ship but bearable and you have the ability to explore with your car.
