Hi Vern,
VF>33 Galloncommunity tank, with a variety of common fish: serpae and
VF>neon tetras, some danios, a weather loach - that sort of thing.
VF>Mostly cheap, hardy, and common fish.
VF>One of the platties seems absurdly swollen. I thought at first it was
VF>preggers - to be honest, I'm not that good on sexing fish. But now I
VF>look closer at it, all the scales seem to be pushed out from the
VF>body, giving it a 'furry' kind of look. The thing looks like a tiny
VF>orange ballon with fins. There does not appear to be any fungal
VF>infections. No other fish in the tank seems at all unhealthy or
VF>abnormal. I haven't lost a fish since the second day I first put fish
VF>in the thing: I have reasonably healthy tanks.
VF>The platty does not seem to be abnormally affected, either. It swims
VF>around reasonably normally, for having become a poster child for
VF>aquarian weight-watcher's programs. It consumes food, and otherwise
VF>seems to be living a normal fishy existence.
VF>Any thoughts? Or is this thing _really_ preggers, and I am about to
VF>become a daddy?
What you are describing above sounds to me as if it could be
"Dropsy". I think it might be an infection of the swim bladder, and from
what I've read I dont think there is a cure for it I'm sorry to say, but
maybe someone else might no better than I.
Regards, Nigel
