RS> Moses was high on drugs: Israeli researcher RS> Mar 4 08:07 AM US/Eastern RS> High on Mount Sinai, Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God RS> deliver the Ten Commandments, an Israeli researcher claimed in a study RS> published this week. RS> Such mind-altering substances formed an integral part of the religious RS> rites of Israelites in biblical times, Benny Shanon, a professor of RS> cognitive psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote in the RS> Time and Mind journal of philosophy. RS> "As far Moses on Mount Sinai is concerned, it was either a supernatural RS> cosmic event, which I don't believe, or a legend, which I don't believe RS> either, or finally, and this is very probable, an event that joined RS> Moses and the people of Israel under the effect of narcotics," Shanon RS> told Israeli public radio on Tuesday. RS> Moses was probably also on drugs when he saw the "burning bush," RS> suggested Shanon, who said he himself has dabbled with such substances. RS> "The Bible says people see sounds, and that is a clasic phenomenon," he RS> said citing the example of religious ceremonies in the Amazon in which RS> drugs are used that induce people to "see music." RS> He mentioned his own experience when he used ayahuasca, a powerful RS> psychotropic plant, during a religious ceremony in Brazil's Amazon RS> forest in 1991. "I experienced visions that had spiritual-religious RS> connotations," Shanon said. RS> He said the psychedelic effects of ayahuasca were comparable to those RS> produced by concoctions based on bark of the acacia tree, that is RS> frequently mentioned in the Bible. RS> Copyright AFP 2008 Makes sense. After all, most HONEST religions admit the use of herbal concoctions and preparations to "go there" to see God(s). In my opinion, people that state that they have spoken with God without such are either insane or liars (or both). But if they took something first then they "had an experience"...I can buy that they saw SOMETHING! I doubt that it was with God, though...BUT I've had experiences on mind expanding drugs that WERE extreme enough to be life altering. I'm simply not about to offer that same were "God visits". They call them thar drugs "mind expanding" for a reason. And the being up on a mountain for many days... sounds like a ritualistic fast to me, then seeing a burning bush? Shit, sounds like a Native American Indian experience! http://www.myspace.com/jesusonacidman --- Thunderbird 2.0.0.12 (Windows/20080213)* Origin: The Eastern Star - Fidonet Via Your Newsreader (1:123/789.0) SEEN-BY: 10/1 3 14/250 300 34/999 90/1 106/1 120/228 123/500 134/10 140/1 SEEN-BY: 222/2 226/0 249/303 261/20 38 100 1381 1404 1406 1417 1418 266/1413 SEEN-BY: 280/1027 320/119 633/260 262 267 690/734 712/848 800/432 801/161 189 SEEN-BY: 2222/700 2320/100 105 2905/0 @PATH: 123/789 500 261/38 633/260 267 |
