Jerry Schwartz,
Thank-you for your message concerning the meds. All that I have read
indicates that the social interaction that kids have with one another
should be altered by behavior modification. The kids must be taught to
take turns and to listen when it is not their turn. I have tried to do
this early on in their lives. I know it is difficult but I do the best
that I can with them. The reason for the "drug holiday" is that my 10
year old girl is having a hard time maintaining a body weight of 52 lbs.
and I am worried that the ritalin may be affecting this. I want to see
for myself if it is. Before she took the ritalin, even before she was
diagnosed with ADD, I found about 10 sandwiches still in the baggies
under a low dresser in her room. They were from school lunches that she
made herself but she didn't eat them. She is hyperactive, so she needs
the food to grow right. The other day I found 8 slices of bread under
the same dresser minus the baggie and the bologna that went in them. I
guess you could say we are making progress. She likes junk food and will
eat that whenever she can but that's not real good either. I just signed
them both up for summer camp at the local YMCA where they can practice
getting along with other children. They went last year and had a good
time and made new friends. My 11 year old boy doesn't seem to have all
the problems that my girl is having. Do you have other problems with
your son? Does the learning get any better? I worry also about the
behavior when they get older. Right now they are respectful children,
will that change? Thanks for writing.
