A simple item to correct.
Drop out to a command prompt and go to your Windows directory. Find all
the files that end with the extention .PWL. There is usually a minimum
of two of them, one named GLOBAL.PWL and one named {name}.PWL where
{name} is the login name you use to access the machine. Delete the
{name}.PWL file, close the command prompt session, shut down and reboot.
When the system comes back up it will ask for a login name. You can
reuse the same name you had before if you want. It doesn't matter. The
system will probably tell you that you do not have a password log and
would you like to create one. Answer yes. At this point, press ENTER
for any prompts requesting or confirming a password. This will place a
blank password in the password log when it's created. The login part is
done.
Finally, go to START -> Control Panel -> Networking. Below the window
of items you have installed for networking (Microsoft Client for
Microsoft Networks, etc.) there is a window labeled "Primary Login". It
is usually defaulted to Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks. Use
the scroll bar on the right of that window and scroll down to "Windows
Login" and make that your default login. Click on OK. The system will
take a few moments to do some updating and then it will inform you that
you've made some changes and you need to restart the system. Click on
OK to restart the system.
When next the system comes up you will not be prompted for any login
information and the system will go straight to the desktop. You will,
however, have your networking running as it did before, minus a login
screen.
If you ever want the login screen back, simply go back into your
networking folder and change the Primary Login from Windows Login back
to Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks, shut down and reboot.
This will also work with Novell Networks as long as you use Windows95's
built-in Netware client and not the 32-bit clients provided by Novell.
