subject: Sound programming in 16bit

The sound unit that I use, that was made by ethan Brodsky because I was just
too lazy to write it myself reads uncompressed .RAW sound format in 8bit and
any sample rate from 8000-48000KHz. It's able to output 8 bit and 16 bit sound
and doesn't have a volume control, but that doesn't matter, what I like about
it is its ability to mix 8 sounds at once very well and does not "click" like
windows 95/98's Active Player and Media Player does.

Now, my first question, is, when I output the 8 bit sound, it plays the sounds
at a respectable volume, actually, the sound amplitude is about the same as
Windows.. But when I decide to output the sound with the 16bit DMA channel, the
sound volume goes really, it plays the sound with more crispiness and quality
but the volume.. I have to turn my volume knob almost to the top.. And when I
return to Windows, damn the sound is loud....

Anybody know why it does this, also, if anyone has an idea how to incorporate
volume, that would be great. The problem with adding volume is that you'll need
a 64KB lookup table.. "www.pobox.com/~ebrodsky" to get the library..
