One of the elephants is not a formal member of the herd, and the rest of
the herd is not showing any signs of agression, to you they seem like one
big happy family. However the elephants themselves do know which of their
number is part of the herd and which are not.

As a outsider, who are you to decide which elephant is not a true herd
member, when you are not the one best equipped to decide or detect such a
thing?
