It turns out that the noise I was hearing was not from the power supply fans after all. The culprit was the small fan on the ATI video card. When I put the computer in standby I had assumed the power supply fan was the only thing left turning, but in fact the video card fan is left running as well. I guess the old power supply noise masked the sound of this fan. When I temporarily disabled the video card fan, I could hear that the power supply was very quiet indeed. The CPU fan makes quite a bit of noise as well, but I had identified that sound, which disappears in standby. Now I need to decide whether the Antec is really worth $70 given the remaining cacophony.
