| subject: | Obama & Embryonic Stem Cell Research |
As many Christians expected, President Barack Obama has opened the proverbial "Pandora's Box" even further when it comes to embryonic stem cell research. According to a 04-23-09 New York Times article entitled "Stem Cell Compromise", while he has not completely fulfilled his campaign pledge regarding the technique known as "therapeutic cloning", nevertheless, the Obama administration has now made it possible for federal financing to be made available for embryonic stem cell research which involves using embryos which have been discarded by fertility clinics. However, certain strict rules have been put in place in order to safeguard against abuse. I do use that word "abuse" hesitantly, because just the fact that they are destroying unwanted embryos, in order to obtain their stem cells, is in fact abuse, and a hideous form of abuse at that. Aside from the fact that Obama has now opened the door further, what concerns me is that the president may possibly be playing it shrewd here. In other words, it is possible that Obama may have decided to open the door a little at a time, rather than in one big public rush, so as not to raise the ire of pro-life advocates any more than he really needs to. In short, while federally-financed "therapeutic cloning" is still a no-go at this current time, will it still be a few years from now? When he thinks that no one is looking, will Obama slowly loosen his administration's current position regarding "therapeutic cloning", and begin to provide federal funding for it? In my view, the fact that Obama has opened the door further at all is a tragedy. I have plainly stated my position regarding embryonic stem cell research in my articles. Such science demonstrates a total lack of respect for the sanctity of human life, regardless of its stage of development. Human life, and embryos, are not a commodity, or a biological product; they are a creation of God Himself. Thus, embryonic stem cell research is immoral, unethical, and ungodly. It is in fact, playing "God", and we humans have no right to do this. As I point out in my series regarding this issue, it is a well known fact that adult stem cell research, which is already being used in positive ways, is not hindered by these moral and emotional issues, because it does not involve destroying days-old embryos.
