It is not a loud whine, and I wonder if it is only due to the lack of
turbulent noise that I can hear it. Should there be absolutely no bearing
noise? It has the frequency of a dial tone, and about the same loudness
from across the room if you left the phone off the hook.

I've actually already taken the fan apart once a few months ago. I think it
has a fluid bearing, from the description of the part on the web.
