It depends on what you want to do with language. For every day communication,
letter writing, ect. it probably isn't but if you want to do anything more 
with
the language -or, as you point out, learn another language- then knowing
grammer makes life a heck of a lot easier. I feel that the basics, at least,
are necessary.
