Well, it was nice of you to recommend something one message ago that you have
now stopped using because "it isn't that great."

NetWare supported "non-dedicated" server operation in their 2.x series, which
ended with 2.2. I strongly recommend against trying to use something that
old.
You can run NetWare servers in non-dedicated mode, even right up to the
latest 4.11, if you run them under OS/2. It is a little-known option that
NetWare servers can operate as OS/2 processes, allowing client operation on
the OS/2 side of the machine. This is an installation option.
If you don't use NetWare, you usually end up with a non-dedicated server.
Both OS/2 Warp Server and NT Server only operate in non-dedicated mode, and
they are the major competitors to NetWare. OS/2 Warp, NT Workstation,
Windows 95, and Windows for Workgroups 3.1x all support peer servers in
non-dedicated mode. Caldera OpenDOS, the successor to Novell DOS and DR DOS,
also supports peer server operation in non-dedicated mode.
