At NKP I was one of the backend aircrew in the EC-47 program.  I made
it a *point* to never walk under the wing front to back (or vice versa) - I
figured that if I *never* did it I wouldn't forget and do it when an engine
was running, so always the long way around the wingtip.

The engine maintenance people were a bit more casual, I watched one of them
wheel a stand between the prop and the wing of an EC-47 while the engine was
idling, the top of the stand was less than a foot from the prop.  Then he climbed
up the stand, opened a panel on the cowl and started fiddling with something 
inside, while the engine was still idling (one of his colleagues was sitting in the
cockpit, leaning out the window and watching him).
