You're close, but not quite. You're right about what it stands for, but
ADSR's and other envelope generaotrs are used for far more than just
controlling volume. You control filters and oscillators as well, and the time
constants on delays can also be controlled with them.
They were invented years before FM synthesis was, and they were used in
subtractive synthesis (Moogs, Arps, etc) for years before FM was used, at
least commercially.
The whole concept of voltage control seems to be lost in these digital days,
and things did exist before computers, you know (G).
