No, actually not.
Hardly anything can be done in a physics lab without the aid of computers
nowadays. I have four machines in the lab for controlling the experiment
and data acquisition alone. Of course there are quite different approaches
to controlling an experiment or evaluating measured data. If I had to
rebuild things from scratch today, maybe I would go for LabView and MathLab
or something like that. But I have "inherited" some equipment and
software in a usable state from colleagues, so I cling to that and extend
it with some Java software of mine.

We didn't have a point system when I was studying. I guess it's about to be
introduced these days to make it easier to change universities across
Europe.

The BaS/MaS is something really new here in Germany. I guess this is the
first year that a new student can enrole for it here in Hannover. We'll
have to see how this all works out in some years.
