To be picky (grin)...."One Nation" was always in it. "Under God" was added
by, I believe, the Eisenhower administration.
For the record, most public schools have never forced the saying of the
Pledge of Allegiance. Most teachers that I know asked everyone to stand, even
those that don't say the Pledge for religious reasons. (If those stand like
everyone else, it is less noticeable that they do not say the Pledge.) In my
9 years of full time teaching, I only had one child refuse to stand or say
the pledge. (Then again, 5 years of my teaching experience were in Christian
schools and in a school on a military base.) I had it happen several times in
my subbing experience, but those I let go.
