JF>in from my newly planted garden... and three of my baby plants have been

Snails are soft, right? They HATE crawling over very rough territory
(making all that slime must be very debilitating); so some people use
fine gravel, coarsely crushed eggshells, squares of sandpaper or
roofing tiles around plants to discourage snails. Some also leave
boards and a bit of food garbage in little heaps a short distance
away, then check these traps come morning and destroy any slimy
  invaders.
JF>get in there if they REALLY wanted to... I read once that you can use a
JF>little cup of stale beer to deter the snails... I don't exactly know
JF>why... getting them drunk will curb their appetite for my plants? '-)
It's the yeast component of beer that attracts them; so dropping a
little bread yeast in warm sugar water and placing the resulting
bubbly stuff in sunken tin cans should do the same. For some reason,
the beer either kills them outright, or disrupts their "thinking" so
that they don't take shelter before daybreak. Then sunlight or birds
  kill the survivors.
Dogs also like yeasts; so they aren't apt to be harmed or made drunk
by the yeast mixture. (Tell us if they are! I knew one beer-slurping
  dog. :-))
