Why don't you read him first, and then come to a conclusion? Otherwise
you're being just as circular as you assert he is.

You wanna find out for us? I personally don't care. Why don't you
go look it up and report back ...
MM>Illich has lived and worked all over the world: in 1950 as a parish

you need to be more clear. I don't see it. Are you attempting to
be sarcastic. If so, your allusion is too vague for me.

MM>Why should you provide a certificate of graduation to learn something
MM>or teach something that you want? It's ridiculous.
 MM>It's discriminatory.

Your selection of meat is _your_ choice, your personal selection. But
your decision on what you get to study in school or whether you need a
degree to get a certain job, is not. Someone else, who you don't even
know and who isn't related to you, has already made these decisions
FOR YOU. That's the problem.

MM>1. If you are a great surgeon somehow in spite of not learning to

RM> But wouldn't this be discriminatory? Who are these people
RM> to judge the intrinsic worth of another? ;-)

Because they are directly making use of that other person's skills,
and because they are excercising their free will in doing so. Yet, they
aren't telling that person how he should look, or what he should study.
They are making a decision whether or not to trust his abilities, based
on what they know he has already studied, what they know of his character,
and so forth.
MM>This type of system is much better than a schooled-system, because
MM>the outcomes are equally as good if not better, and it is a much

RM> This statement may work for Illich elsewhere, but not here.
RM> It is not "better", because I refuse to accept that a priori.
Let's put it into practice and see what happens.
 RM> It WOULD be freer;
RM> I'm not sure that it's "fairer", I'd be inclined to consider
 RM> it "dumber"..... ;-)

Then let's check it out.
DT> I want to be a jet pilot too but I had to learn all this boring

 DT> and stuff like that.

MM>There's plenty of good pilots around, especially from the older days,
MM>who don't know math and never went to aviation school. Crop dusters,
 MM>private pilots, etc..
RM> And they don't fly jets....

And I woulnd't get into a jet plane with them.
MM>Let's say you don't need any schooling or certification to fly a plane.
MM>If you're so stupid as to attempt it without knowing anything about it,
 MM>you'll probably kill yourself.
RM> And, likely, many others in the process....
If they don't have the where-with-all to investigate this guy's background,
then that's fate. That's their choice. WHo are you to interfere with
that?
