This post tells it all.
: : : By the way, what do folks do, specifically,
: : I do a lot.
: Yes, you do.
: : Hammer spring tension is reduced (suprise)
: This puzzled me for a minute, until I thought about the
: implications of changing the valve as well. This ligher
: hammer spring should also provide some lift to the
: trigger-improvement activities, no?
Yes. The factory guns springs seem to fight rather than harmonize.
: : Valve capacity is increased and components upgraded
: : Bolt probe is recontoured
: Quite a fine point here - I wonder, how much does this one
: mod do by itself (if I'm correct in assuming it is to improve
: airflow)?
If nothing else is done 20 fps. If eveything else is done 35 fps.
: : Piston is made adjustable for length
: Makes a lot of sense. That would allow each gun to be
: fine-tuned for compressed chamber volume above the piston,
: something that the OEM couldn't do in mass-produced products
Factory actually did it for about a tear during the crew cut era. It was
a rebuildable unit (pop on cup) with adjustable length.
B4 that the piston was pitched and the cup was vulcanized to the piston.
That's not worth rebuilding.
: because bottoming the piston (when tolerances added the
: wrong way) would be a no-no.
The need to error on the side of gutless. Better for us. Tom
Gaylord(Airgunletter) has a steriod streak and Robin Parks(US
Airgun) has a steriod 392 and one Gary James the editor of Guns and Ammo
has got his mitts on one as well. I can't wait for
the reaction from each of them. Tom hadn't seen the latest trig and he
was blown away by my version. I wish I could see his
face when he tries a stocker. LD is the trigger man. He sorted that
trigger to a very high standard. He's also responsible for
talking me into going in the direction of a low pressure high volume
system. Intuition is where he gets me. I'm kind of slow.
Come up with most of my stuff in the middle of the night. Larry pulls it
out of his hat regularly.
: : Trigger is made sweeter than any American gun
: I haven't shot a "new" Benjamin, but I understand that the
: trigger is one of the worst points going for it.
It is two stage and that is the end of anything good you'll say/think.
Stock it is a lawyers dream come true. Although it is so
bad that people will mess with it in desparation. That is not a wise
move in my opinion. It doesn't have to hook the sear so
much. 12 lbs. is a little out there. That is a guess. My gauge goes to
4lbs. The gun can be hung from the trigger pointing down
and jerked and it won't go off. Amazing. That is transformed into a 1
lb. take up with a 2.5-3lb. crisp break.
: : Lever is beefed up.
I want to add that anybody who has bought a Benjamin/Sheridan in the
last 6 years can benefit from the beefy lever mod
which places a third support pin to integrate the wood structure into
the support of the lever. I have offered in the past for
people to send there gun in for the beefy lever mod and the trigger mod
for $25 and I will throw a bottle of secret sauce in.
This is the best thing you could do for this model to get the best life
from a part that really suffered from poor engineering in
stock trim. The third pin solves that problem. Whether the factory makes
that change is the question. If you want to drill your
own it is a .125 hole 3.5 " from the front hole slightly closer to the
centerline of the action than the other two pins. Be sure to
pin it with a pin and try to drill it as straight as possible thru the
lever and you want to hold the forearm firmly against the tube
when you drill the hole. I have given this mod to crosman and it is up
to them what they will do with it. Now I give everyone
else the specs and you too can drill holes in the side of your gun to
make it better. Just take care cause if you slip. OOUPPS!
