You will have to read the instructions to find out specifics on charge
times and battery replacement intervals. Generally, the UPS is constantly
kept charged as long as it is plugged in an active outlet.

The 9-pin connector is for connecting the UPS to the serial port of your
computer so the operating system can be notified that the power has been
lost. This can be used to cause the computer to initiate a clean shutdown
when you lose power.

The weight comes from the lead-acid battery it contains. It is similar to a
small car battery.
