Yeah, that's always a PITA.  I get one I like and stick with it for a long
time as I don't like having the flavor of the week card in the mix.  So I
do like keeping to one manufacturer that has a good driver track record. 
I've never used NVidia tho, been buying ATIs for a long time after Matrox
slipped a bit.

I usually buy from a local IHV to get good service after the sale, he takes
care of returns and does give me a spare 'close enough' to tide me over
until the original is replaced.
