I don't "think" there were any TR-7As produced with the one-piece rear
panel, but Drake DID offer to "update" any TR-7 to an
"A" version. So
it's possible that an "early" unit was updated by Drake.

OR, since Drake abandoned a long-term "anti-counterfeiting" policy when
they sold out their parts stock a few years ago and sold just the
plastic strip for the front panel, it's quite likely that there are
units of all ages out there with "A" strips and nothing else!

The differences were almost all previous "optional accessory" items
being made "standard" in the A model, so there's no real added value to
a "real" A versus a "converted" A. The Noise Blanker,
500 Hz filter,
and a previously unused phono connector on the rear panel was designated
"TX" and wired in parallel with the microphone input. Probably the best
indicator of an A is the RC network installed in filter position "B" as
a pseudo AM B/W filter, similar to the 150 resistor that was shipped in
the AM filter position in the R-4C. There was also a gas discharge
surge arrestor added, located across the RFC to ground on the RX ANT but
I think those were added to just about any TR-7 that came back to Drake
for work.

I think the "A" appeared around s/n 11,000.

There is an excellent article on the variations at
