Hi, from Austin, Tx. Look at the size of the corporations which back
the engine you want. You hear about the OMC and Mercs here in the
USA, however do you know the size of the corporations? All have
experence in competition with 2 cycle engines and marine motors.
*OMC $1.23 billion Johnson/Evinrude
*Brunswick $3.04 billion Mercury/Force
*Yamaha $4.29 billion Yamaha
*Suzuki $10.28 billion Suzuki
I currently have a something else and have been very pleased. It is a
5 year old 140 hp Suzuki. Had a 1970 110 hp Merc for 4 years which
did very well too.... With todays designs, if you take care of your
motor, it will take care of you.
Did you know that Suzuki even offers a line of outboard water jet
motors to go on the back of a runabout or fishing boat? Hey, look,
No propeller....
Good boating and good hunting..Regards Joe
BG> I am hoping to start some dialog here... I am in the midst of
BG> restructuring the power to my newly restored 14' fiberglass runabout.
BG> What I was wanting to know--- which is better --- Johnson/evinrude or
BG> something else.
TO>
TO> Something else, though not all others......
BG> My dad is an avid merc fan and he has told me quite a
BG> bit about them--- Higher revs, smoother running due to more cylinders,
BG> etc.. I am handcuffed into the older versions because of my old cable
BG> steer system, which I am thinking puts a slight twist on things.
TO>
TO> Mercury is the best gasoline powered consumer marine engine, bar none.
TO> Is there some reason that you can't replace the cable system with a
TO> Teleflex?
BG> Any of the OMC people I talk to want to put all the mercs at
BG> the bottom of the nearest lake/pond/cesspool etc... I was
BG> looking for a rebuttal from the mercury crowd I guess.
BG> Any Ideas???
TO>
TO> Yes I have an idea that the OMC people know that Mercs are better, and
TO> are ashamed to be associated with OMC! There are a few kinks with a
TO> Merc, but I wouldn't buy anything else. The only thing that I dislike
TO> about Mercs is that they are often hard to start, requiring a few
TO> trys.
BG> By the way I'm looking in the range of 4o to 60 hsp.
TO>
TO> I have had 2 50HP Mercs over the years, and they are great little
TO> engines; I have never needed a tow back to shore, and I bought
TO> both of those engines used. I then went to a 80HP Merc, no problems,
TO> now I have a '91 100HP with oil injection, and it kicks tail! All of
TO> those engines were hard starting at times, but I have never worried
TO> about going offshore with any of them; they all brought me back, every
TO> time!
BG> I've got a '58 johnson 35hsp and I've got my
BG> doubts as to whether skiing would work out to well, it seems a bit
BG> sluggish and won't rev up very high---about 22mph was the very top end.
TO>
TO> I had a 20HP Johnson (my first outboard) on an 18 foot skiff, and it
TO> was an ok motor, but the driveshaft broke after a few years, and the
TO> thing was new when I bought it; never again! I also had a 115HP
TO> Johnson on a boat that I bought a few years back, and after 1 day
TO> on the water I sold the Johnson and bought a Merc. Never again
TO> (again)!
BG> The end of the season also makes this the right time to buy
BG> I'm thinking. any ideas would help a ton--- I'm a real rookie---
TO> Indeed, the end of season is the time to switch (to a Merc). You've
TO> had a Johnson, and that's the story with OMC; we've had 'em, and now
TO> we know better! Buy a Merc; you won't ever regret it (after it is
TO> paid for). Take care.
TO> ... "What sort of frog?" "A *dead* frog."
