Oops, saved the last one a little too soon...
And so it came to pass, on 11-20-96 21:08,
that Gordon Gilbert spake unto John Allen:
GG> The PC drive doesn't have these limits, AFAIK, but I thought I read
GG> in Stereo Review that PC audio discs won't play on a regular CD
GG> player, which makes them useless, unless you have your PC drive
GG> plugged into your main stereo or something. Has this changed?
It just depends on the software. Digital data on a disc is just digital data
on a disc. If the software can write the appropriate information to the
disc, there's no reason a standard CD player can't read it.
We've got a CD-R where I work; I haven't had the chance to play with it yet,
but from what I can tell, the included software (called "Gear", and includes
Windows, OS/2, Mac and Unix versions!) creates audio CDs by simply taking
your music, stored in .WAV format sampled at 44.1kHz/16bit (this presumes
you've already sampled the songs to hard drive with your standard sound card
and recording/sampling software), and writes it to the disc along with the
necessary control information.
