I am in Ontario, Canada. and NITROX has been here for awhile.  I am just
getting into diving myself (my Open Water course is just starting), but
I have heard many thing about NITROX.  The advantages to it are the
ability to stay down longer then with air and allow some deeper dives
(to  those qualified) then what could be acomplished with  air.  But you
must know how to  mix it properly and know the formulas involved in
calculating the adjustments.  Certian mixtures are only good at certain
depths.  NITROX  seems to be catching on fairly big here, and I have
heard a number of divers that say they prefer NITROX.  If you could
afford to do so I think It would be worth taking the NITROX course.
But as I said before I  don't know too much about it as I am just
beginging to get into diving.
